Sugar Testing

Winemaking Sugar Testing

The Grape and Granary sells a number of tools that are needed to test the sugar level of the must or wine. The easiest way is to use a wine hydrometer. Most all home winemakers will have this tool. It will allow the winemaker to ensure the correct sugar level prior to fermentation and allow the winemaker to monitor the fermentation to completion. You can get this tool with a built-in thermometer or one that just gives very accurate readings at the end of fermentation.

Another handy tool is the refractometer. The refractometer only takes a few drops of liquid (or must) to take a reading. It is difficult to get a reading after fermentation begins so it is best used prior to fermentation and for those growing or buying fresh wine grapes.
