Winemaking Fining Agents

Grape and Granary offers a variety of clarifying (fining) agents for wine. Historically things like sparkolloid and bentonite were quite common. These days, Kieselsol and Chitosan are more common. Many wine kit manufacturers will include bentonite which is added at the beginning of the fermentation process which helps clear the wine as it ferments. Then, during the secondary fermentation, Kieselsol and Chitosan are added. These two fining agents have opposite polarity and stick together with particles that are in suspension and settle them to the bottom. You can buy these separately or better yet, puchase both as Super-Kleer or Dualfine.

We have found that isinglass works well on white wines. If you are making large batches, you can buy both Kieselsol and Chitosan in one liter bottles. Bentonite is also inexpensive for those doing larger batches.
