Winemaking Filter Pads

When it come to filtering wine, a coffee filter will not do the trick. To remove yeast cells you must pass the wine through a filter pad that can remove yeast cells which are about the same size as a red blood cell. This equates to about 2-8 microns. Grape and Granary sells a number of filter pads for home winemaking.

6 Microns: Best for big red wines when you want to retain as much body and flavor as possible

1 Micron: Best for white wines and fruit wines

.5 Microns: Best for sterile filtration when you want to remove both yeast cells and bacteria. This pad can strip out some of the flavor in big red wines.

Grape and Granary sells filter pads in all three of these sizes for the Pressure filter system, the Buon Vino Mini Jet System and the Buon Vino Super Jet System.

Filter pads create a professional looking 'polish' to the wine. In wine made from fresh grapes or grape juice, the filter will also remove  unstable tartaric acid (wine diamonds) and tannins. Filtration is most effective when the wine is chilled prior to filtration. If possible, allow the wine to sit in spare fridge or out doors at 45 deg F. for a week or so prior to filtering. Then, pass the wine through the wine filter while the wine is still cold. Allow the wine to warm to room temp before bottling it.
