Winemaking Oak Spirals
The Grape and Granary sells a number of oak spirals made from different types of wood and toasted to various levels of toast. The two biggest advantages of oak spirals are 1) The oak flavor and aroma is extracted fairly quickly due to the spiral cutting of the wood (usually only 2-3 weeks of contact time is needed) and 2) Oak spirals are easy to add to a carboy or barrel and are easy to extract. No infusion tube or sock is needed to contain the spiral.
In our opinion, the spirals most commonly used in winemaking are the American Medium Toast spiral and the French Medium Toast spiral.
