Homebrewing Instruments- Thermometers

All  homebrewers will have a need for a thermometer. For homebrewers, having a good thermometer is just as important as having a brewing hydrometer. For all-grain brewing, a good thermometer is needed to measure the temperature of the mash. A 5 to 10 degree temperature variance during the mashing process can make a big difference in the flavor and fermentability of the beer.  Extract brewers will need a good thermometer for the grain steeping portion of the brewing process. If the brewing water is too hot (over 165 deg F) during the grain steeping, tannins can be leached from the grains and into the water and impart an astringent flavor to the final brew.

All home brewers will need a good thermometer to track the temperature of the beer 'wort' after the boil to insure it is cooled to the proper temperature. It is very important to cool the beer wort as close to fermentation temperature as possible. If the beer 'wort'  temperature is too high and the yeast is added prematurely, the yeast can die. Also, too warm of a fermentation can lead to off aromas and flavors in the finished beer. Monitoring the temperature of the batch as it ferments is also very important.

Most homebrewers will find that a floating glass thermometer is sufficient for all of their hombrewing endevors. However, more advanced brewers will most likely have a ported kettle and a threaded NPT thermometer that threads-in to the kettle port will make the brewing process easier and more enjoyable.
