If you are using a brewing hydrometer to measure your beer sample, chances are you will find it much easier to put a sample in a test jar so that the hydromenter can float freely. If the hydrometer is touching the bottom of the test jar or sticking to the side of the fermenting vessel, you will not get an accurate reading.

Using a baster or a wine thief to pull the sample and fill the test jar will make the job a breeze. Test jars will allow for more reliable and more accurate hydrometer readings.
