Cheesemaking is a fairly straight forward and easy process, which is ideal for anyone looking to pick up the hobby. It all starts with the milk; generally, one gallon of milk will make about one pound of cheese. Ensuring you have milk that is of the appropriate quality is the most important thing you can do. Using non homogenized milk is the easiest way to ensure success right from the start. Starter cultures are generally added to the milk along with a milk clotting enzyme called rennet. This will allow for the formation of the 'curd' or solids. Curds are then separated from the whey (liquid). Once the whey has been removed you are left with your delicious cheese curds. Cheese curds can be consumed 'as-is' with a little salt or you can Press the curds to make hard cheeses.
