Our Northern Brown Ale recipe is a medium bodied brown ale. It has a sweet malt aroma with toffee, nut and caramel notes. Moderate malt sweetness comes through with a nutty, toasty and biscuity flavor. The color is amber to brown. When pouring, the beer supports an off white to light tan head. It uses the noble Fuggle hop for bittering and flavor. Commercial examples are New Castle Brown Ale, and Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale.
The kit includes 3.3 lbs malt syrup and 2 lbs of dry malt, steeping grains, steeping sock, pellet hops, priming sugar, safale s-04 dry yeast, Whirlfloc tablet and instructions. It requires a 45 minute boil and makes 5 US gallons. If you prefer to use liquid yeast we recommend Wyeast #1084 or #1968. Anticipated SG 1.049, SRM 23, IBU 23, and 4.9% ABV.
