According to Jon Iverson, a Rubbermaid Brute would be fine for a primary fermenter. They are not food grade of course. But does material matter in the primary fermenter if it is very clean?

It does matter because lower grade plastic can leach into the wine. You can however put a food grade plastic liner in them.

Brutes with NSF Standard #2 code. I believe these are the yellow, gray and white are food grade. And available at home depot, etc. YMMV

The food grade ones are stamped 'HDPE' as well.
