I have a homemade basket for a press and I am using a set of galvanized bands to hold it together. Question: Should I be using those metal bands or shift to the strong, green plastic bands used in commercial bundling of things like lumber? Fundamental question: With the short, momentary contact of the must, does the material matter in the construction?

This can answer both questions. If you haven't experienced any problems with the matierals your using, like metallic tasting wine, things of that nature. You shouldn't have to worry to much about changing anything such as material unless the metal isnt stainless. Then maybe try the plastic bands, but if your wine taste fine, smells fine and looks fine, don't worry.
